Tonight's broadcast devoted a lot of time to "diners clandestines", a phenomenon in France that I had missed. Here is story on such dinners in Toulon. And more on the trend.

"A Multitude of Oysters? Looks Can Be Deceiving" - NYTimes.com

I am not an oyster person. That said, how does one compare both the production of oysters in NC, and the consumption of oysters by people in NC, with that in Louisiana?

"How Long Island Became Potato Island" - NYTimes.com

I did not realized that potatoes on Long Island - where I grew up - had suffered the same fate as earlier in Ireland. In any case, what sort of art do we have in NC relating to the sweet potato?

I think we need a solid review of North Carolina cheeses - past, present, and potential.

"The Gratifying Adventure of Group Cooking" - NYTimes.com

I have come to value the "doing it alone" approach, but a chacun son gout!

Salone del Gusto

Only 3 - really only 2 - US exhibitors?

"Stanford Organic Food Study and Vagaries of Meta-Analyses" - NYTimes.com

We spend far too much time on something like this. If we can get someone to eat a carrot instead of something out of a bottle cardboard box, that's a plus and a much bigger plus than any differences between organic and non-organic. I would be more interested in seeing a study of the correlation between carrot consumption and obesity, for example. I bet those who eat carrots regularly are healthier, generally, than those who do not. Where is that study?

"Shining a Light on Myanmar’s Comfort Food" - NYTimes.com

I bet this is of interest to a lot of refugees living in NC, and it should be to the rest of us as well.

We need more of these graphic presentations. Lots of editing questions on this one; for example, when was the brie made and where in France, by whom?

"The Domino Theory, Redux" - NYTimes.com

He's right. The arguments against governmental action here are simply hog wash, or more appropriately, soda pop.

"That Flawed Stanford Study" - NYTimes.com

Whatever the benefits may be, I think "organic" is a marketing ploy today for the most part. It's too bad that a good idea got out of control and into the hands of the literal bean counters.

"Restaurant Review - Calliope in the East Village" - NYTimes.com

It's interesting to see how one generally associates French cooking with being special or very good.

Chicken labels

Here is one from Dia, a Spanish-owned discount supermarket, from a store in Nice:

What does it tell me, the consumer?

Manger - Bouger

What do we have in NC like this? It appears in most all food advertising either by law or agreement. Today, I saw a McDonald's ad for some awful looking hamburger concoction with the post script - "Pour votre sante, manger au moins cinq fruits et legumes par jour." - For your health, eat at least 5 portions of fruits and vegetables every day.
