Sam's Club vs. Costco: Store brand match-up - Yahoo

I wonder if this is still the case?

"Food
Costco’s only generic line “Kirkland Signature” offers an array of high quality choices at affordable prices. Sam’s Club, on the other hand, is a “club of many brands.” From its original core generic label “Member's Mark,” Sam’s Club has expanded to now offer category-specific private brands such as Artisan Fresh, Daily Chef and Simply Right, to name a few.

Finding apples to apples comparisons was difficult and sales are constantly changing but we did find these head to head comparisons.

Sam’s Artisan Fresh Chicken Salad goes for $4.78 per pound, a little bit cheaper than Costco’s Kirkland brand for $4.99 per pound.

If you’re shopping for boneless, skinless chicken breast Sam’s Club offers a 12-pack for a $1.99 per pound. At Costco, as 12-pack of the Kirkland signature fridge-to-freezer chicken breast goes for $2.99 a pound.

In this battle we choose Sam’s Club for offering a greater variety of store-brand food choices and, in some cases, lower prices. And based on a few taste tests, the Artisan Fresh options are quite tasty!"

Restaurant inspections now easier to find | The Herald-Sun

This is good - will be interesting to see how the Yelp partnership evolves. I wonder about access to inspections for supermarkets, for example?

NCDA&CS - Food & Drug Protection - Food Program - Starting a Food Business

"
Restaurants, including catering operations, are regulated by county health departments.
Meat and meat-containing products are regulated by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Meat and Poultry Inspection Service.
Packaged foods other than meat products are regulated by the NCDA&CS Food and Drug Protection Division. Some can be produced in a home setting. No license required, but inspections can be made.
Seafood is regulated by the NCDA&CS Food and Drug Protection Division. Wholesale seafood dealers must fulfill training requirements.
Dairy products, including milk, frozen dessert, cheese and butter, are regulated by the NCDA&CS Food and Drug Protection Division. Licensing is required.
Wineries are regulated by several agencies, including the Federal Tax and Trade Bureau. Consult the Starting a Commercial Winery guide for more information.
Farmers do/do not need a business license to sell commodities grown on their farm."

So, who inspects our supermarkets and where are those reports for us to review?

Worst peaches ever from Trader Joe's

They started off super hard and in a few days, some remained like a rock, some had rotted and the rest turned a dark color inside. Those that one could cut were mushy and dry inside. They returned my money.

Lowes Foods - local?

I sent this message today:
"Your "message" on WUNC lauds your NC roots and commitment to local farms and commerce in NC. Yet, today, as I look at your pre-printed insert in a local Chapel Hill newspaper, I find JUST ONE product (some grapes) identified as being "local" or from anywhere in NC. Don't you realize how weird this seems?"
Their response:
"Good afternoon,

Thank you for contacting Lowes Foods.

We appreciate you taking time to share your thoughts with us. We are very committed to our local roots and we do try very hard to work with local businesses and farmers to provide our guest with local and homegrown products.

However, there are times where we have to get our products from other resources in order to ensure that our guest have the freshest products available to us.

We certainly understand where you are coming from regarding the advertisement you saw recently and we will gladly forward your comments to our marketing department so your voice can be heard.

If you require additional assistance please feel free to contact Guest Services toll free.

Thank you for allowing us to assist you today!

Food growers and producers

I'd sure like to see a town-by-town and county-by-county list of all food growers and food producers in North Carolina. And I'd like to see percentages on how much of what is grown and produced is exported somewhere in NC, the US or elsewhere in the world. (It sure would be nice to see the same for all non-food items as well!)

Walmart v. COSTCO

Interesting, occasionally, to look at the prices at COSTCO v. Walmart. Consider frozen berries - organic, at COSTCO - 4 lbs for 11.69; non-organic at Walmart - 3lbs for 9.97. Easy choice.

Kroger grocery chain targeted by gun control groups - CBS News

At a minimum, I will try to avoid shopping at Kroger whenever I can and will focus on buying only items that are on sale.

Locally grown in the Carolinas | Lowes Foods

That may be, but where are the "local" tours of the stores? Where is the local part of "my" store in Chapel Hill? They talk in credits on WUNC of supporting 200 farms and local businesses. Which ones wind up in Chapel Hill at "our" Lowes Foods?

For Penn Station Diners, Nowhere to Go but Up - NYTimes.com

It never changes!

"Some travelers entrust their stomachs, anxiously, to the tacos of Pennsylvania Station, where dark hairs and soda stains soil the dining tables above the tracks. Others make it as far as the soft pretzels, sagging meekly behind glass, or the pizza shops whose fumbled marinara sauce has fused semipermanently to the floor.

But for any famished commuter in this long-disparaged hub, the nation’s busiest transit site, the specter of culinary surrender is never far-off.

“This is the armpit of the city,” said Steve Fox, from Manhasset, N.Y., waiting for a train recently at the TGI Friday’s on the Long Island Rail Road level."
