Relying on others to make food choices

I was reminded a couple of weeks ago about how much reliance many people place on the food recommendations of others. In planning a lunch in Mumbai, India, friends were debating where to go with their American visitors. Their daughter, in her 20s, immediately went to one or more of the sites in India that container comments to find the reactions of customers to some of the potential lunch places. The end result was superb, but I still worry that we are relying too much on people we don't know, who may know very little, in some cases be paid something for giving praise, etc. in making important food decisions. As with Wikipedia, these are useful additional sources of guidance but, in the end, each of us is both the final judge of the food, and the quality of the information that leads us to it. Our friends used all resources and produced a superb choice!
