It’s often said that Aldi and Lidl were set up by two rival brothers – but that’s just not true. Aldi was set up by the Albrecht brothers Karl and Theo and they split the company into Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd after a row in the 60’s.
But neither went off to set up Lidl.
Lidl was actually founded in the 1930s by a member of the Schwarz family. The name Lidl is the surname of Josef Schwarz’s former business partner Ludwig Lidl.
